"Shaken Baby Syndrome"
What is it and what does the State of Texas require of
us as child care professionals!
Shaken Baby Syndrome is caused by violently shaking a baby in a motion that forces the head to harshly whip back and forth. Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is the most common cause of death due to child abuse. Annually, in the United States there are 1500 children estimated to endure this abuse and a very high percentage of these children die. Even if a child does not die from this abuse, Shaken Baby syndrome accounts for many cases of long-term disabilities in young children.
The requirements for child care centers in Texas are found in chapter 42, sections 42.0421 (b) and 42.0421 (c) of Texas' Human Resource Code. This code states that employees of licensed child care centers, group day care homes and registered family homes providing child care for children under 24 months must receive on hour of annual in-service training on recognizing and preventing shaken baby syndrome, preventing sudden infant death syndrome and understanding early childhood brain development.
Child Care Resources, Inc. provides three options for you to receive this annual training requirement for your staff.
